I'm really looking forward to the sequel. It's just hard to compress a full epic story into the length of one book but Priory of the Orange Tree joins the vaunted ranks of books that manage it well. Ead is a sister of the Priory of the Orange Tree which means she has magic powers and she's been tasked with using them to protect Queen Sabran of Inys. Legend holds that if the bloodline of Inys dies out, a malevolent and all powerful dragon will rise up to enslave the world only it seems that's already starting to happen.
The language in this book is so lovely as the author is a language nerd who puts a ton of effort and care into selecting and creating the perfect words. The characters are mostly fully realized and well developed though there are a few who feel like hangers-on and the only other major critique is that the final section does feel a bit rushed.
Still, this book had a certain un-put-down-able quality to it and I tore through the whole think in 3 days. That's quite an endorsement when you're reading a page book. It's not as widely known and celebrated as Dispossessed, Left Hand of Darkness, or Earthsea and it doesn't contain her best known short stories but this is still an incredible collection of stories. As the name implies, the stories center around exploration and discovery often scientific discovery and these lead to some thought provoking scenarios where characters often have to wrestle with the moral implications of unexpected findings.
If you've ever read a Le Guin book before, you know you're in for thoughtful stories with great prose and this certainly meets expectations. Chiang is probably best known for this collection's title work, Story of Your Life, which became the basis for the film Arrival.
I will say that Story of Your Life is definitely the best individual entry in this collection but most of the other stories come quite close to being as good. Chiang really likes to explore mathematics and scientific revelations but that's not his only focus. I was quite surprised when one of his stories wound up being an extremely intelligent consideration of the Book of Job and what true piety must mean. It's certainly very science heavy but he approached it all in a way that I felt made it compelling and he always managed to center interesting characters in fairly grounded conflicts.
Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune — Winner of the "Ohhhh, So That's What That Ghostly Moaning Was" Award After House in the Cerulean Sea was such a lovely read last year, I was thrilled to learn there'd be another Klune book coming out so quickly. Under the Whispering Door is not quite at the same level as his big hit, but it still has a lot to offer and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Wallace Price dies without any friends he was kind of a prick and is taken to a sort of limbo where he resides as a ghost in the home of a tea shop owner, Hugo.
Wallace is expected to move on to the afterlife soon but he slowly falls in love with Hugo and learns to be less of a prick which makes him want to cling to life all the more. The conclusion won't be much of a surprise to anyone who has ever read or seen A Christmas Carol but the story is a lovely romance with some very funny moments. It's filled with all the sweetness and heart I've come to expect from a Klune story.
Midnight Bargain by CL Polk — Winner of the "Gentlewoman's Guide to Summoning a Demon for Fun and Profit" Award Polk has become the go-to writer in recent years for gaslamp fantasy and she came out strong last year with possibly her best novel to date. The book explores the idea of lack of women's rights through the lens of women having their magical powers if they are to be mothers. Our heroine, Beatrice Clayborn, wants desperately to become a highly respected mage but her time of marriageability is nearing and she fears losing her independence.
She summons a demon to help her find a way to become a great mage but unexpectedly also finds herself falling for a dashing noble who is interested in her as well. The book is chalk full of good worldbuilding and has a fantastic closing chapter complete with one of the funniest moments I've seen in fantasy this year. It's definitely a great meditation on what equality means and how it realistically must be achieved.
Plus, the characters are quite a bit of fun and everyone loves a mischief-causing demon sidekick, right? Oh boy, I love escapist fiction! It's a bleak book rooted in the real history of Latin America and I was not prepared for how relevant it would be to the current political climate of my home country, the United States.
It can definitely be a tough read at times for that reason but it's quite powerful and it does end on a hopeful note about how to move forward and right the wrongs of the past in a deeply divided nation. I will say this is one of the least fantasy books on my list, the otherworldly elements are pretty much limited to one character being semi-psychic but it's still a great read. Snow Child takes place in the Alaska wilderness where an elderly couple find a mysterious child living alone in the tundra who they believe to be some kind of spirit.
They raise her as their daughter and well, that's mostly it. I can't say much more without spoilers. Mostly the prose. The book itself may not have much in the way of plot but the incredible writing manages to convey the wintery feeling of feral magic even as the rest of the book plays coy with how much of this is grounded in reality.
The book is peppered with little introspective emotional moments that make every character interesting and feel fully formed. It's still a bit of a slow read, but if you like a leisurely pace and good literary prose, it's well worth checking out. Butler also does a great job showing just how much coming to sympathize with these aliens turns the protagonist, Lilith, into a social outcast who other humans fear immensely.
Though there are weird moments that I can see being too much for some people see my award name above , I found this to be such a philosophically interesting book and definitely one of Butler's best. I'm not sure how to classify this one. Part metafiction, part drug trip gone bad, and part fantasy, this book is a wild set of stories that sits the fence between being a novel and a short story collection. If you're going in looking for absolute meaning from a book, this is definitely the wrong one to read but if you enjoy weird worldbuilding that is oddly compelling and well written, this is a great pick.
Honorable Mentions The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal - Winner of the "Mental Health is Important" Award I'm not generally a fan of hard sci fi. I often find that the as scientific rigor goes up, things I care more about in my fiction like characters and themes often start to flounder.
Fortunately, that's not the case for this book. Elma York is a compelling heroine who wants to be an astronaut but unfortunately its the s. Her competence slowly wins people over to her cause but she can't shake the persistent fear and self doubt that plagues her as the first woman to have even a chance at being an astronaut. Though much of the novel centers on scientific problem solving, the real focus is always on York's mental strain to live up to impossible standards and this drama helps elevate the work by showing how competence can be undercut by unfair societal expectations.
She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan - Winner of the "Best Historical Fanfic" Award What if the first Ming Emperor was really a woman masquerading as a man to steal the destiny of her murdered brother?
No, this isn't my paranoid conspiracy theory as far as you know , this is the intriguing plot of She Who Became the Sun. I did think the story struggled a bit in translating the real world sequence of historical events into novel pacing but I liked the worldbuilding and was consistently engaged by the plot. The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo - Winner of the "Best Literary Fanfic" Award I feel a little bad that of my three picks on this list, two of them are relegated honorable mentions.
The Chosen and the Beautiful is a retelling of The Great Gatsby from the point of view of Jordan Baker who has been reimagined as a Vietnamese immigrant. Vo uses these tweaks to explore issues of racism and sexism in the 20s that the original novel glanced at but never fully interrogated.
I think it's a great read and that Vo is a talented prose stylist but it's definitely got a niche appeal and I'm not sure how much people who haven't read The Great Gatsby will care about it. The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones - Winner of "The Real Monster Was Man" Award I don't read a lot of horror so I'm no expert on what makes a horror book great but this felt like a great horror book.
The story centers on a vengeful elk spirit that comes to kill the hunters who killed its calf for fun and the story really centers on animal cruelty, environmental destruction, and racism against Native Americans.
Jones is a master of imagery and can unsettle you just through a description of the wind blowing through the plains. It's a creepy story that can be hard to read at times did I mention the animal cruelty?
but it's very powerful if you have the stomach to make it through some brutal gore. Empire of Gold by SA Chakraborty - Winner of the "See? I Do Read Sequels Sometimes" Award The conclusion to the Daevabad trilogy really sticks the landing. I don't read a lot of sequels because a lot of stories experience rapidly diminishing returns on interesting premises. I was worried that might happen here since the Daevabad novels had always juggled the complex inner politics of the city with a looming external threat and I feared the book might not be able to maintain that balance.
After all, a major failing of the final season of Game of Thrones was that it couldn't keep up the complex internal conflicts in the face of grand existential threats. Fortunately, Chakraborty managed to continue to balance both ably and if anything, made the external threat subservient to the internal politics which I thought really worked. The characters didn't all end up where I expected them to but I think they had satisfying journeys and I would definitely recommend the trilogy to any epic fantasy fans who want their political machinations to stay fascinating and complex all the way to the end.

Genre First let's start off with the genre of HI3 and GGZ, which is sci-fi. So what does this mean? Even if HI3 is one of the only sci-fi gacha games, it still has to overcome the popularity disparity of being sci-fi. Back in and still extending to now, sci-fi just isn't that popular compared to fantasy. Imagine if everything about GI is the same except it was sci-fi.
Would GI have been as popular as it is? Probably not. Simply put it's not a risk anymore because in terms of gacha games the fantasy genre is oversaturated. that involve sci-fi can be done well. The genre's popularity will probably increase as well. HSR being sci-fi is no longer a risk. The market is oversaturated with fantasy genre games. You've already see many gacha games come out this year which are sci-fi and we are bound to see more then we'll get an oversaturation of sci-fi games and the loop continues.
Game type HI3 is an action hack 'n' slash game. This game was originally released on mobile. When you think of a mobile game, you typically think of a game that's a pastime and doesn't require much effort to play. HI3 isn't that kind of game. HI3 requires constant focus and attention when you play. You have a game that has gameplay that doesn't appeal to a majority of the population it's targeted to for long term play.
This risk is no longer the case due to the oversaturation in your typical turn-based combat so people want something fresh. Technology has advanced so you can have high quality 3D models and special effects that are more accessible.
HSR is a 3D turn-based RPG with dungeon exploration in the mix. This is reminiscence of traditional JRPGs. HSR is turn-based with auto. This is nothing new in the world of gacha games and there are still turn-based games being pumped out, though it seems like companies are trying to produce games that fit certain niches these days.
The point is, is that there's already a huge market for turn-based games. The second thing is the dungeon exploration. There are people that like exploration, as seen by GI. Dungeon exploration can be comparable to open world exploration if done right. User, story and characters Another thing is the game itself doesn't have the player as the male protagonist the game refers to the user as captain and from what I remember before the first couple chapters were reworked from the Reburn event, the player being the captain of the Valkyries in the main story was canon besides APHO, but that's more of a side story and was released much later.
Having no male gacha characters and no male protagonist is IMO not that risky while considering the main player base is almost all male. But having the user as more of an observer of the story instead of being a part of the story is IMO risky, but this was implemented later. We have a self-insert silent main character who I'm going to assume can be chosen by the user as male or female. The game has male and female gacha characters of various types.
I'm sure the game will have innuendos, but it'll be "light" please keep the existing "ships" from HI3 and GGZ in HSR miHoYo. That's a different story. I haven't experienced GGZ's story, but GGZ was released in and HI3 in And when I think of China back then and now, I don't think the CCP is too fond of the subject matter, fiction or not.
I doubt they're going to be adding really heavy innuendos for HSR or maybe they will? And the market has shown that people still spend on new turn-based games. The ultimate risk is whether miHoYo can make HSR appealing to people. Of course they have to make new systems e. combat and add and make adjustments, but from what I've seen they just took pretty much every existing system that's applicable in GI and plopped it into HSR.
The bomb cost was GI, and HSR is here to reap the rewards. I'm sure it still costs a bunch to produce, but I can't imagine it being more than GI. And from the looks of how they go about the game in terms of instanced areas, the time to create areas compared to GI will be less.
Marketing cost My initial feeling is that I don't think they'll spend as much money on marketing for HSR than GI.
IRL ads in Asian countries etc. I have a hard time believing they'll put IRL ads in western countries, but the more I think about it the more I see them doing so. Ultimately I don't think HSR is a game miHoYo desperately wants people of all types and backgrounds to play compared to GI. As such they'll spend less on marketing comparatively to GI.
miHoYo will have games that they will heavily market, I just don't think HSR is one of them. I wrote the previous part of this section a couple weeks ago. I thought a lot more on the topic, and my opinion has somewhat changed. A lot of this has to do with the genre of game HSR is, which is sci-fi turn-based. IMO turn-based games aren't as popular to the younger generation than real-time games. But there're still so many popular turn-based games e.
So what I ultimately think is, who cares if it's turn-based. miHoYo has the funds to spend a lot on ads, but just because you have the money doesn't make it a good financial decision. I do think they'll have a number of IRL ads in western countries. The last thing I'll mention is that a wide range of people now know what games miHoYo makes. Gacha games. I talked about this in my "Controversies" section in my previous post under "Genshin Impact misleading advertisement", but people didn't know GI was going to be a gacha game until after the game was released.
But now when HSR is going to be released, people will know so they will be a lot more wary of HSR. Place in the current market I initially thought, aren't there already so many turn-based gacha games out there?
They also made a new list on Fandom but the way they set it up is IMO bad. Here are some stats from the list: There are games on the list 69 One could compile the data to see the trends over time. I should also make sure to specific the type of turn-based games I'm talking about since "turn-based" is a blanket-term for so many different types of games e.
card games, chess, checkers, games like Pokémon, games like Fire Emblem, games like the turn-based Final Fantasy games.
If a game involves taking turns, it's a turn-based game. Here are the base criteria for the turn-based games I'm talking about whenever I use "turn-based" in the rest of this post, I'm talking about games that meet the following criteria unless specified otherwise : The user has a roster of units Units have stats, abilities, and progression The user can form parties consisting of units The user uses a party of units to perform turn-based combat with another party of units could be AI-controlled The active unit s in combat are not randomly chosen due to an in-game system I'd also like to note that typically, turn-based gacha games have some form of auto and some non turn-based games do too , so what's the difference between autoing in a turn-based game versus an auto battler?
Nothing really. HSR is: 3D Anime-styled Sci-fi The game isn't open world, although it does have some pretty big instanced areas. From the looks of things, it plays like a traditional JRPG. At it's core, HSR is an anime-styled 3D sci-fi turn-based game. I'll also note that HSR's 3D models primarily consists of realistic human proportions i.
not chibi, etc. What other existing or known upcoming games fit these criteria? Off the top of my head I couldn't think of one. The gacha list showed one but that game was 2D and it doesn't exist anymore. Google search didn't help. So HSR doesn't have a direct competitor. Off the top of my head, existing games I know of are: EH E7 etc. The second group of games I'm talking about are games that are based off popular franchises.
Let's be clear here. Or their constant power creep is pretty bad. These sorts of games are generally solely carried by the franchises they are based off of.
These sorts of games also make a big chunk of the market in terms of users. If they try HSR out and like it, great. If not, that's fine. But for the users that are dedicated to the one game, that's a different story. What is the likelihood of these users trying HSR? Sticking to HSR? Spending on HSR? What I'm getting at is that these users are highly likely to not give HSR their time of day.
Before I begin this section, I'd like to point out that EH has recently gone through massive changes in Season 5, probably due to how poorly it was doing. The gist is that it's copying many of E7's systems, essentially making EH an E7 "clone". E7 is HSR's main competitor. HSR is going to follow the GI route and target the casual audience. As such, gameplay will be on the simplistic and easy to understand side of things.
I don't see HSR having any sort of PvP. They also won't have tens of pretty much useless units that you get for foddecollection purposes though I do think especially with how things seem to work in HSR right now that not having many units is a downside in GI, elemental reactions play a key part in teams.
Even switching out one unit of a different element changes the dynamic of your team composition. And I don't think a large majority of E7 users fit this criteria. IMO HSR is for people that tried GI but didn't like it for it's combat gameplay and would rather have a turn-based game instead. It's also for people that tried E7 and didn't like it what other option do they have?
Expected revenue Revenue is an interesting thing because we don't know how much money miHoYo games make and this applies to other games as well.
The only "reliable" source of information that is widely used in the western world is Sensor Tower. Is Sensor Tower accurate? To an extent. Do we have any other "reliable" sources? But I'll just be basing things off Sensor Tower because it's well known.
Note that Sensor Tower only accounts for Android and iOS of certain regions. So in the case of GI, Sensor Tower won't take into account any other platforms for payment i. I'm going to assume that a big chunk of GI's revenue in the western world comes from PC. So here are the 3 main questions: Will HSR make more than GI?
Will HSR make more than HI3? Will HSR make more than E7? When I say make more, I mean make more money on average over time. I don't think HSR will make more than GI simply due to the fact that HSR is turn-based, sci-fi, not open world, and my assumption that they won't spend as much on ads compared to GI though as every day passes I think they will spend more..
I think HSR will make more than HI3 because HSR is essentially a turn-based GI with a coat of Honkai paint. It's targeted towards the casual audience, its social themes are accepted by the vast majority and game systems will be easy to follow and simplistic. Now the billion dollar question that investors gamblers would love to know the answer to. If you've ever played E7, you'll realize one thing about the game.
It goes hard on monetization. It blasts you with IAP ads. All this that can't be disabled. You have an extensive list of different shop sections and currencies for IAPs and watching ads for stamina. You also have multiple different gacha currencies where some are pretty much only obtainable through spending real money. You also have PVP. And you know when you have gacha and PVP ��.
HI3 does this too, but not to the extent of E7. Contrast to GI, where nothing monetary is explicitly shown to the user. It just exists and is hidden in one or two layers of menus. Here's my bold prediction.
My heart says yes but my brain says no. I'm going with my heart.
